Delhi's Monsoon Delay: Cooling Zones & Pre-Monsoon Showers Amid Heat Wait

The much-anticipated southwest monsoon is unlikely to reach Delhi on its usual onset date of June 27 this year, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet. This delay means residents shouldn't expect immediate relief from the heat.

The agency reports that the western arm of the monsoon trough has been stalled over the Konkan region since June 8, while the eastern end remains near Muzaffarpur in Bihar for the past five days. No significant advance is expected for either end in the next five days, indicating a slow progression even if the trough eventually moves.

Despite the delayed monsoon, Delhi is forecasted to receive pre-monsoon showers throughout the week. These light, short-lived rains and thunderstorms are crucial in keeping temperatures in check, preventing the mercury from soaring above 40 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung base weather station has recorded maximum temperatures around 33 degrees Celsius recently, which is about 6 degrees below normal, with minimum temperatures also staying 4 degrees below normal.

However, a slight rise in temperatures is anticipated over the next three to four days, with highs likely to hover in the higher 30s until Sunday. Historically, Delhi's monsoon arrival has often varied, reaching on June 29 in 2025 and as late as July 13 in 2021. The most delayed onset was recorded on July 26, 1987.

Amid these fluctuating weather patterns and the wait for the monsoon, Delhi is taking steps to mitigate the heat's impact. The capital plans to set up "cooling zones" for parents at 97 exam centres during the NEET Retest 2026. This initiative addresses the hot weather conditions prevailing in the national capital, offering some comfort to those accompanying students. The city continues to review its preparedness for the coming monsoon season.
