Uber Launches Audio Recording and Passenger Verification for Safer Rides
Uber is rolling out new safety features including in-app audio recording and verified passenger badges to give both riders and drivers extra peace of mind during trips.
Uber is taking some big steps to make your next ride feel a whole lot safer. The ride-hailing giant has just announced a suite of new features aimed at giving both passengers and drivers extra peace of mind. Starting this Thursday, one of the most talked-about updates is the ability for riders to record the audio of their journey directly through the app.
If you ever feel uneasy during a trip, you can simply hit a button in the app to start recording. The audio is encrypted and stays on your phone, meaning no one—not even Uber—can listen to it unless you decide to submit it as part of an official safety report. If you don't file a report, the recording automatically deletes after two weeks. Drivers will be notified if audio recording is enabled before they pick you up, and they have the right to cancel the booking without any penalty if they aren't comfortable with being recorded.
In addition to audio recording, Uber is introducing a "verified" badge for passengers. This badge shows that a user has had their details cross-checked with third-party databases or has uploaded a selfie and official ID. This is a huge win for drivers, who will now have a better idea of exactly who is getting into their vehicle. Drivers will start seeing these badges when a ride is requested starting next week.
UK General Manager Andrew Brem highlighted that these investments are all about building confidence across the platform. Local transport minister Lilian Greenwood also praised the move, noting that technology plays a vital role in making private hire services safer for everyone involved. Whether you're heading home late at night or driving for a living, these updates are designed to make the experience feel much more secure for everyone in the car.
