The heart-wrenching event, which occurred on Friday, has prompted the district administration to suspend a government engineer and launch a full-scale inquiry into the circumstances leading to her death.
The young girl, a resident of the remote Methyani village, had fallen seriously ill and was being rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Rajouri. However, their desperate journey was cut short at Chak Methyani, where a recent mudslide had rendered the road impassable. Despite the valiant efforts of local volunteers who eventually managed to free the vehicle, the girl's condition rapidly deteriorated, and she passed away before reaching the hospital.
Officials revealed that the Chak Methyani-Panglar-Kotecharwal road, a crucial lifeline for several isolated villages, has a troubled history. It was washed away during last year's monsoon and had only been temporarily restored. Just two weeks prior to this tragedy, the same stretch was hit by another mudslide, leaving the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road entirely unmotorable.
An official report submitted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Kotranka, shed further light on the grim situation. It confirmed that the blocked road caused a critical delay of two to three hours. The report also highlighted that this particular stretch has remained in an "extremely poor condition" due to recurring landslides and deep ditches, making it perpetually unfit for vehicular movement. The girl had been battling an illness for approximately a month, having been discharged from GMC Hospital, Jammu, just two weeks earlier before her condition worsened again.
The tragic death underscores the severe infrastructure challenges faced by residents in these remote areas. The ADC's report grimly concludes that people living in Narla Bamble, Kotecharwal, and Panglar continue to endure immense difficulties in transporting essential items like patients, food grains, and fertilizers, painting a stark picture of neglected public services.
