Dramatic Rescue: Python & Chicken Saved During Hyderabad Ganesh Procession! 🐍

In a dramatic turn of events during Hyderabad's Ganesh immersion festivities, animal welfare activists, with the assistance of local police, successfully rescued an Indian rock python and a chicken from alleged exploitation. The incident unfolded on Sunday, September 20, 2026, targeting a dance troupe from Visakhapatnam that was reportedly using the live python in its performances.

The Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) had been tracking the dance group for five days, following intelligence that a snake was being cruelly used during their acts. An initial attempt to intervene during a Ganesh procession in Kondapur on September 19 was thwarted when the alleged snake handler managed to escape.

However, GHSPCA, upon receiving further information about the group's presence at another procession in Jawaharnagar the following day, coordinated swiftly with the Madhuranagar Police. Their joint efforts led to the apprehension of the alleged handler, who was found in possession of both the Indian rock python and a hen.

GHSPCA officials reported that the python was being openly displayed as part of the road performance, while the chicken was also subjected to cruel treatment. Both animals were immediately rescued.

The Indian rock python, a species protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, was placed under veterinary observation.

Examinations revealed an infection affecting its oral cavity and teeth.

According to GHSPCA, the python is currently receiving treatment and, once fully recovered, is expected to be released back into its natural habitat, pending necessary permissions from wildlife authorities.

This rescue highlights the ongoing vigilance required to protect wildlife from exploitation, even amidst large cultural celebrations.
