Census 2027 Goes Fully Digital with Self-Enumeration
Census 2027 kicks off as India shifts to a paperless, smartphone-enabled process with online self-enumeration and later field listing.
Census 2027 is going entirely digital, with citizens given the option to self-enumerate online as the next national population count begins in Ballari. The district administration outlined that the exercise will be India’s 16th census overall and the eighth since Independence, and it has been reset to start in 2027 after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The move to a digital, paperless process aims to streamline data collection while maintaining accuracy and participation.
The first phase allows citizens to self-register their details on the official portal se.census.gov.in until April 15 this year. This will be followed by door-to-door visits between April 16 and May 15, 2026, for house listing and data collection. The final phase of physical enumeration is scheduled for February 2027, completing the nationwide census cycle.
In Ballari district, a total of 2,798 enumerators and 473 supervisors have been appointed. The team includes teachers, anganwadi workers and ASHAs, with 17 charge officers (12 for rural areas and five for urban areas) designated to oversee operations. Training has already been imparted to enumerators across taluks, supported by 48 field trainers and four master trainers trained at the Administrative Training Institute in Mysuru.
The census process will be paperless, with enumerators using smartphones and mobile applications to collect data. Dedicated teams, including multi-tasking staff and state coordinators, have been deployed to address technical issues. A total of 2,544 house-listing blocks have been identified across the district, each comprising 150 to 200 houses, to ensure comprehensive coverage and efficient data gathering.
