Samsung Workers Clinch Massive AI Bonus Deal Amid Rising Internal Tensions
Samsung employees in the chip division are set for life-changing bonuses thanks to the AI boom, but not everyone is happy. Discover the details behind the record deal.
Samsung Electronics is making headlines again, but this time it's not just about a new phone. The company's union members have officially given the green light to a historic profit-sharing agreement. This deal comes as a direct result of the massive profits generated by the global artificial intelligence boom, which has sent demand for Samsung’s memory chips through the roof.
Under the new agreement, nearly 78,000 workers—mostly from the high-performing semiconductor division—could see bonuses totaling roughly $370,000 each this year. To put that into perspective, the deal guarantees that annual bonuses for the chip segment will amount to 10.5 percent of that division's operating profit, paid out in shares, with an additional 1.5 percent provided in cash.
While the engineers and chip specialists are celebrating, the deal has sparked significant infighting within the company. Employees in other divisions, like consumer electronics, feel left behind. In fact, things have become so heated that a union representing non-chip workers actually tried to take legal action to block the vote. They argue that the lopsided distribution of AI-driven profits creates a deep divide among the staff.
The stakes for these negotiations were incredibly high. Samsung accounts for a staggering 12.5 percent of South Korea’s gross domestic product, and memory chips alone make up over a third of the country's exports. An 18-day strike that was originally threatened could have seriously rattled the national economy. For now, the strike has been averted, but the debate over how AI wealth should be distributed is far from over.
Samsung’s financial performance has been nothing short of spectacular lately. In April, the company reported that its first-quarter operating profit surged by about 750 percent compared to the previous year. Earlier this month, its market capitalization even crossed the $1 trillion mark for the first time. As the AI era continues to accelerate, the company—and its workforce—find themselves at the center of a very lucrative, yet complicated, financial transformation.
