A 27-year-old software engineer died after his SUV plunged into a 20-feet-deep water-filled pit dug for the basement of an under-construction building in Sector 150, Noida. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026, triggering a major search operation. The body was recovered around 4 a.m. with help from the NDRF, SDRF, fire department and local police.
The deceased has been identified as Yuvraj Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park in Sector 150. He was employed as a software engineer with a reputed Gurugram-based company and was returning home from work when the accident happened. The rescue operation involved multiple agencies and spanned several hours before the body could be retrieved.
Police said preliminary findings point to fog and overspeeding as possible factors, with the car reportedly crossing a drain and tumbling into the pit. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and any contributory factors.
Local residents staged a protest near the construction site, alleging negligence by the Noida Authority for failing to install barricades and reflectors around the drain. They claimed similar accidents had occurred in the past and that authorities had been informed about safety gaps but did not act. Authorities are expected to review site safety protocols in light of the incident.
