In a candid press conference in Chennai, Lokesh Kanagaraj clarified why he chose not to helm the highly anticipated Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan project. He explained that while both legends were enthusiastic about collaborating and it would be a landmark reunion after 46 years, they requested a lighter, more humorous film after a streak of action-heavy projects. Lokesh noted he writes with an action-forward voice and felt he couldn’t deliver the tone they were seeking, which led him to step away from the project.
Turning to Kaithi 2, he offered context on the film’s status within the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). The Karthi-led sequel, initially planned after Leo, had its schedule affected by his other commitments. He revealed that after agreeing to work on the Rajinikanth-Kamal venture, the production and dates shifted, and Kaithi 2 eventually moved forward with a different director for those slots. He also mentioned that Mythri Movie Makers had extended him an advance six years ago, and he was intent on clearing that commitment before returning to Kaithi 2.
On the broader LCU, Lokesh spoke about the ongoing collaboration among its projects, including Vijay’s Leo, noting that the universe continues to explore themes like a drug-free society and shared objectives among its heroes. He did not promise a definite release timetable but stressed that plans within the LCU are evolving with steady progress. He also highlighted his admiration for Kamal Haasan as a writer, acknowledging how their conversations have influenced his storytelling approach.
The filmmaker’s updates come as Tamil cinema fans await clarity on multiple frontlines within the LCU, including Kaithi 2 and the ever-evolving roster of connected stories.
