Saffron vs White: Political Row Erupts Over Thiruvalluvar's New Look

A fresh political storm has swept through Tamil Nadu following a controversial depiction of the legendary poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The row began after an event at the Raj Bhavan, where Governor Rajendra Arlekar paid floral tributes to a portrait of the poet dressed in saffron robes. This specific choice of attire has sparked a massive debate, as Thiruvalluvar is traditionally depicted wearing a simple white robe.

Political leaders from the DMK, TVK, and MDMK were quick to voice their disapproval. Udhayanidhi Stalin, the DMK’s youth wing secretary, took to social media to claim that the Governor's actions were a direct test of the self-respect of the Tamil people. He reminded the public that similar attempts had been made in the past and were met with equally harsh criticism.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) also joined the fray, emphasizing that Thiruvalluvar’s teachings, known as the Thirukkural, provide a universal code of conduct. They argued that trying to confine such a global figure within a specific religious or political identity is an insult to his legacy. According to TVK representatives, the poet belongs to all of humanity and should not be used for political gains through religious symbolism.

MDMK chief Vaiko described the incident as unforgivable, adding to the chorus of voices that see the move as an attempt to saffronize Tamil cultural icons. While the Governor’s office maintained the tribute was a mark of respect, the opposition remains firm that the poet's identity should remain neutral and inclusive. This clash highlights the deep-seated tension over cultural representation and political ideology currently playing out in the state.
