Mumbai Voter Alert: 2.1 Million Face Exclusion from Electoral Roll

Mumbai residents, attention! More than 2.1 million electors, accounting for 31.35% of the city's total 6.78 million voters, are staring at a potential exclusion from the electoral roll. This massive number of voters is slated to receive notices because they were either “unmapped” or found to have anomalies in their details, such as name or age, during the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

If these individuals fail to submit the necessary documents, they could lose their right to vote. The draft electoral roll, which was released on August 31 after the SIR in Maharashtra, showed significant changes across the state. A staggering 20.68 million electors, or 21.14% of the total, were dropped statewide.

In Mumbai alone, 34.75% of names were deleted from the draft roll. If your name is missing from the draft roll, requires corrections, or you wish to file an objection, time is running out. The deadline to do so, with supporting documents, is September 30.

The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on November 4.

The state election office provided a breakdown of the reasons for these widespread deletions. Approximately 7.68 million voters were reported to have permanently shifted their residence, while 7.55 million were simply absent or untraceable.

Tragically, 3.48 million were deceased, and 1.76 million were found to be registered in more than one constituency. An additional 223,000 individuals refused to register despite being located at their addresses. Specifically for Mumbai, the district electoral officer highlighted that 32,037 voters have anomalies in their details and must rectify them to stay on the electoral roll.

A much larger group, 1.39 million electors, were categorized as “unmapped.” These are individuals who have been unable to produce their records from the 2004 SIR, which was the last such intensive revision. Officials clarified that these unmapped voters will receive notices at their registered addresses or via WhatsApp.

The notices will ask them to submit documents to prove their nationality, as their credentials from the 2004 SIR are no longer available.

Similar documentation will be required for any anomalies found in names or other electoral details.

To facilitate this process, 968 assistant electoral registration officers, 710 in the suburbs and 258 in the city, will conduct hearings.

The significant number of deletions and the tight deadline have not gone unnoticed. Opposition parties have already voiced their concerns and demanded an extension to the time period allowed for claims and objections, urging authorities to provide more flexibility for citizens to ensure their voting rights are protected.
