Bangladesh is once again at the center of political developments as its President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, announced his resignation on Friday, July 24, 2026. In a formal letter addressed to Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the Speaker of the National Assembly (Jatiyo Sansad), Shahabuddin cited serious health issues as the primary reason for his inability to continue performing the duties of his office.
President Shahabuddin had been sworn into office on April 24, 2023, during the third term of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, making him the twenty-second President of the nation. His tenure spanned a period of significant political upheaval, including a controversial election in January 2024 that saw Ms. Hasina re-elected, followed by widespread protests and the eventual fall of her government on August 5, 2024, leading to the formation of an interim administration.
Notably, in his resignation letter, Shahabuddin took the opportunity to defend his previous decisions that paved the way for the interim government after Hasina's ouster. He listed several health complications, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney issues, as reasons for his departure. Earlier reports had already hinted at the incoming government's plans for a leadership change, with speculation that the new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who took office on February 17, 2026, was considering Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani as Shahabuddin's successor.
