Maharashtra Logs 24,171 Crimes Against Children in 2024, NCRB Data Shows

Maharashtra recorded the highest number of crimes against children in 2024, clocking 24,171 cases. The NCRB Crime in India 2024 report shows Maharashtra leading the country in this category, with Uttar Pradesh close behind at 22,222 cases. The data is part of a broader national picture that also tracks crimes against women, where Maharashtra registered 47,954 cases overall; Mumbai led in FIRs related to women with 6,358 cases, while Delhi topped the country in this category.\n\nExperts caution that an increase in police data does not necessarily mean a rise in crime alone; it can reflect improved reporting and policing. The NCRB notes that the apparent rise also includes more sexual offences against minors, cyber offences, and economic offences.\n\nCybercrime in Maharashtra shows a growth trajectory: from 8,103 cybercrime cases in 2023 to 9,922 in 2024. Mumbai accounted for 4,939 cybercrime cases, while Bangalore topped with 17,561 in the city-wise tally. The state recorded 403 cyber stalking and 2,827 cyber fraud cases. A large backlog remains, with 27,981 cases pending investigation across 2023-2024.\n\nOther notes from the NCRB: under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered 721 cases in 2024, down from 812 the previous year. In economic offences, Maharashtra ranked third with 20,083 cases; Telangana and Rajasthan recorded 39,127 and 27,637, respectively. Mumbai alone saw 7,771 economic offences including criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating and fraud. The figures provide a snapshot of Maharashtra's crime landscape and underscore the need for continued reforms in policing, judiciary, and child protection services.
