The case involved a freelance HR consultant, Tamires Camal Taquidir, who was owed an unpaid debt of £7,000. Seeking a more accessible and affordable legal solution, Taquidir engaged Garfield AI, paying approximately £400 for their services. Garfield AI took on the responsibility of drafting legal letters, initiating court proceedings, and meticulously preparing the case. This included the creation of four witness statements and compiling a comprehensive bundle of documents for the three-hour trial held at Wandsworth county court on May 14.
A key aspect of this groundbreaking win is the collaboration between AI and human expertise. While Garfield AI handled all the legal preparatory work, including disputing a counterclaim from the defendant, a human barrister was subsequently hired to advocate for Taquidir in court. Philip Young, co-founder of Garfield AI, lauded the outcome as a "landmark moment" for access to justice. He emphasized that for many small businesses, the high cost of traditional litigation often forces them to write off debts. Garfield AI aims to bridge this gap, offering a more cost-effective solution for claims ranging from £30 to £10,000. The firm received authorization from the Solicitors Regulation Authority in April of the previous year.
Taquidir herself expressed relief and satisfaction with the service, stating, "I was owed money for work I had done, but it felt like the process of recovering it could be too stressful, expensive and time-consuming. Garfield made it possible for me to pursue the claim and keep going."
