The connection between Styles and Hockney was cemented in 2023 when Hockney painted the musician for his "Drawing from Life" exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Styles was captured in one of Hockney's signature vibrant styles, sporting a bright yellow and orange striped cardigan. The two had met when Styles traveled to Hockney’s studio in Normandy to sit for the portrait.
On Friday evening, before Styles performed his song "Aperture" to the massive Wembley crowd, a profound quote from Hockney was displayed on screens throughout the venue. The quote read, “What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.” This powerful message resonated deeply with the audience, highlighting Hockney's philosophy and Styles' appreciation for it.
Interestingly, Hockney himself admitted to British Vogue in 2023 that he wasn't fully aware of Styles' immense celebrity when he painted him. "I wasn’t really aware of his celebrity then," Hockney had said. "He was just another person who came to the studio." The idea for Styles to sit for Hockney reportedly came from music producer Clive Davis, who had also been painted by the artist. Styles, a long-time admirer of Hockney’s work, described the experience as a "complete privilege" and praised Hockney for "reinventing the way we look at the world for decades."
