Reservation Row Heats Up: Jantar Mantar Protest Plans & Govt's Talk Offer
Amid warnings of renewed protests by the 'Cockroach Janta Party' against reservation reforms, Delhi Police denies permission for a Jantar Mantar gathering. Union Minister Chirag Paswan signals government openness to talk
The ongoing debate around reservation policies in India is escalating, with an online outfit-turned-pressure group, the 'Cockroach Janta Party', warning of renewed protests akin to previous agitations at Jantar Mantar. The group has accused the central government of 'vishwasghat' (betrayal of trust) and making "empty promises" to the nation's youth regarding reservation reforms.
However, these plans have met with immediate resistance from authorities. The Delhi Police has explicitly stated that no permission has been granted for any reservation reform protest at Jantar Mantar on the proposed date, Sunday, August 23, 2026. This announcement comes after various videos and social media posts began circulating, urging people to assemble at the iconic protest site.
Amidst this rising tension, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has indicated the government's readiness to engage in dialogue with anti-reservation protesters. Paswan stated that the government is open to talks if the demands are presented systematically. He also highlighted the existing 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS), emphasizing that the focus should shift towards an economic basis for reservations rather than the traditional caste-based system.
The minister also criticized certain political factions, specifically the Congress, for their protests outside a police station. In contrast, Tejashwi Yadav has shown support for student protests, aligning with his party's political stance on the issue. The 'Cockroach Janta Party' continues to press for its demands, claiming the Centre has betrayed the trust of young people regarding these critical policies.
