Tragedy Strikes Athens: Gas Blast Near Acropolis Kills Six, Including Tourists
A devastating building explosion in Athens' historic Plaka district has claimed six lives, including four American tourists and a British national. Investigations point to a suspected gas leak near the iconic Acropolis.
A catastrophic explosion rocked the historic Plaka district of Athens on Friday, claiming the lives of six people and completely destroying a building. The tragic incident occurred in a neighbourhood renowned for its proximity to iconic tourist sites, including the ancient Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Among the deceased are four American holidaymakers, a British national, and a Greek national, reportedly an elderly individual who resided in the affected building. The blast is currently suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, turning a popular tourist area into a scene of devastation.
Emergency services worked tirelessly through the night and into Saturday, sifting through the rubble. Images from the scene showed a landscape of debris and collapsed structures, a stark contrast to the normally vibrant Plaka.
All six bodies were tragically recovered by Saturday afternoon.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the event as an "incredible disaster," reflecting the shock felt across the city.
The alarm was first raised when the American tourists failed to arrive for their scheduled flight at Athens airport later on Friday, prompting initial concerns for their safety. The three-storey building where they were staying, believed to be a holiday rental property, suffered a total collapse under the force of the explosion.
Nearby buildings also sustained damage, and debris was scattered across surrounding streets, necessitating evacuations and causing injuries to some bystanders.
Investigators are on site, utilizing excavators and thermal imaging cameras, though the search for survivors has concluded.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed they are in contact with local authorities regarding the suspected explosion.
This heartbreaking event has cast a pall over Athens, raising questions about safety in its bustling historic areas.
