V.S.U. Shooting: Suspect Arrested, 5 Injured, Campus Safe
A 19-year-old suspect is arrested after a shooting at Virginia State University left five injured. Campus lockdown lifted, authorities assure no immediate threat. Get the latest on the incident.
A 19-year-old man, Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, has been arrested in connection with an overnight shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) that left five people wounded, one critically. Harris was found hiding in a dormitory closet on Saturday morning following a large law enforcement presence on campus.
Authorities confirm that Harris is not a student at VSU. Of the five injured individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 23, four were also not students. One 20-year-old student, who sustained injuries, has since been released from the hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released, and police have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.
Chesterfield County Police have obtained eight felony warrants for Harris, including charges for malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. It is currently unclear if he has legal representation. Efforts to contact Harris's family were unsuccessful.
The shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university's Quad Annexes, where campus police and Chesterfield County officers found the five victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories. The incident prompted a campus-wide lockdown, which has since been lifted. University officials stated earlier that law enforcement does not believe there is an immediate threat to the campus community.
The incident unfolded as students were preparing for the new academic year; residence halls had opened a week prior, and classes are set to resume on Monday.
