Nagaland Devastation: Landslides Claim 8 Lives, Injure 15 in Mon Town
Heavy rains trigger deadly landslides in Nagaland's Mon district. Eight confirmed dead, 15 injured. Rescue operations are underway as CM announces aid. Stay updated on this unfolding tragedy.
In a tragic turn of events, at least eight people have died and 15 others sustained injuries after devastating landslides swept through Nagaland’s Mon town on Sunday, July 19, 2026, morning. The calamity, caused by incessant heavy rainfall and a cloudburst, has left a trail of destruction across the district, which borders Myanmar.
Officials from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) reported that landslides occurred in at least 11 different locations within and around Mon town. The sheer force of the slides led to significant damage, with at least 12 houses destroyed at one site and up to 45 houses reported completely destroyed across the affected areas. Adding to the distress, many parts of the rain-battered Mon district are now cut off, and communication networks have been severely disrupted, hindering initial assessment and rescue efforts.
The Mon Deputy Commissioner, Wennyei Konyak, confirmed that four bodies—three females and a male—were among the first to be retrieved from the disaster sites. Search and rescue operations are in full swing, involving a coordinated effort from the NSDMA, District Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, Assam Rifles, and community volunteers. Their immediate focus is on locating any missing persons and evacuating residents from vulnerable areas.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that the state government is closely monitoring the dire situation. In a move to provide immediate relief, the government has announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹74,000 to each of the injured. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha member S. Phangnon Konyak, hailing from Mon, has urged network service providers to ensure continued mobile and internet connectivity, which is crucial for distress calls, warnings, and coordinating rescue missions.
