Six Missing After Yamuna Boat Capsizes in Hamirpur, Rescue Underway
NDRF and SDRF join the search as a nine-person boat capsizes in the Yamuna near Hamirpur; six remain missing while three passengers are rescued.
Six people, including children, were in a boat that capsized in the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near Kutubpur Patiya hamlet under Bhauli gram panchayat in the Kurara police station area when nine people, excluding the boatman, were returning from a river island. The boat lost balance and went under around 7 pm. The boatman, Dheeru, managed to pull three people to safety—Vishnu, Rinku, and Parul. The remaining six travelers—Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brijrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Mahesh (6), and Aditya (11)—are missing, police said.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have joined the operation. District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal said the search for the missing persons is ongoing. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed district officials to intensify relief and rescue efforts, investigate the cause of the accident, and implement preventive measures to avoid repeats. Senior police and administrative officers have been ordered to monitor the rescue operations personally and ensure all possible assistance to affected families. BJP MLA from Hamirpur Manoj Prajapati said compensation will be provided to the families as per rules and a report will be submitted to the chief minister.
The incident, highlighting the dangers of river travel at dusk, has raised questions about safety protocols on local ferries and boat operations. Authorities emphasize that rescue teams will spare no effort to trace the six missing passengers and bring them home safely, while emphasizing accountability and improved safety checks in the future.
