At the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit in Miami, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would love his legacy to be that of a great peacemaker, insisting he has helped stop eight wars, including a flare-up between India and Pakistan last year. He framed his record as evidence of restraint and diplomacy, even as he touted military successes and warned of Iran.
During his remarks, he jokingly referred to the Strait of Hormuz as the 'Strait of Trump' before quickly correcting himself, insisting the joke was not accidental. He described Iran as a longstanding force shaping instability in West Asia, though he said its position had weakened under what he called the U.S. operation Epic Fury.
"We’re negotiating now, and it would be great if we could do something, but they have to open it up," Trump said, about reopening the strait and restoring maritime access for oil shipments. He described any potential deal with Iran as contingent on that access.
He recounted how he claimed to have stopped the India-Pakistan conflict by threatening tariffs: "If you keep fighting, I’m going to put a 250% tariff on each one." He said the wars he claims to have paused extended to Armenia-Azerbaijan; the Congo-Rwanda; Cambodia-Thailand; Egypt-Ethiopia; Serbia-Kosovo; and Israel-Hamas, illustrating his broader narrative of diplomacy and power.
Analysts noted the remarks come as Washington weighs a force posture in West Asia and as tensions around the Hormuz waterway persist. The event in Miami framed the president's messaging around economic leverage, security, and a reputation for bold action.
