Lando Norris finally clinched his first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, delivering a stellar performance for McLaren. Ferrari's woes began early, underperforming in qualifying. Their challenges escalated when Lewis Hamilton, who had qualified second, was demoted to fifth on the grid due to a penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri. This opened the door for Norris, who started alongside Charles Leclerc on the front row. However, instead of challenging Norris for the lead, Leclerc quickly lost positions to Piastri, Max Verstappen, and Hamilton.
The race continued to unravel for the Italian team. Hamilton managed to get ahead of Verstappen during the first round of pit stops, but the Dutchman quickly retaliated with a brilliant overtake at Turn One, catching Hamilton off guard. Further compounding Ferrari's difficulties, Hamilton incurred another five-second penalty for pit-lane speeding, which ultimately dropped him behind Leclerc at the finish. The Ferraris ended up in fourth and fifth places, a disappointing outcome given their potential.
Lewis Hamilton, who still holds second place in the championship standings, 50 points behind Antonelli, expressed his frustration post-race. "You can't make these kind of mistakes if you want to challenge for a title," he stated, highlighting the costly errors. Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the team's poor performance. "It's difficult to clearly understand the pace, because I think the clean air is key, but first it's not a good Sunday, because when you are one-two on Friday, you expect much more," Vasseur commented. "And on the top we made too many mistakes today, starting with the penalty and the fact that Max overtook us, that each time that we were doing a pit stop, we were losing a position for 0.2 or 0.3 seconds. And then we spent our lives behind the guys, everything went wrong, but for sure we have to do a much better job on Sunday."
