If you asked me to describe Narendra Modi’s G7 journey this June, I’d say it felt like watching India step into a brighter, more assertive spotlight in the global political landscape.
The 51st G7 Summit, held June on 16–17, 2025, amidst the rugged beauty of Kananaskis, Alberta, was set to be a routine gathering, but with Modi invited as a special “Outreach” guest, it emerged as a defining moment in India’s growth.
India, now the world’s fifth-largest economy, wasn’t just invited rather it was needed. Canadian PM Mark Carney affirmed that India’s influence in technology, energy, and geopolitics gave Modi a seat at the table. But that seat came with scrutiny as protests from Canada’s Sikh community, still haunted by the Nijjar affair, drew a complex shadow over his presence.
Modi arrived in Calgary, greeted warmly by PM Carney. The handshake conveyed more than diplomacy. It hinted at a thaw in chilly India–Canada ties. Later that evening, as leaders mingled, the pristine Canadian Rockies provided the backdrop to serious conversations and bear-proof security, a tangible reminder of both the climate and geopolitical wilderness ahead.
On June 16th, Modi opened the day by speaking for the Global South, reminding the G7 that North-centric policies can no longer disregard developing economies:
India has considered it its responsibility to put the priorities and concerns of countries of the Global South on the world stage.
He also tackled terrorism head-on, saying:
It is a betrayal of all humanity when nations support terror networks and yet face no consequences—an unmistakable reference to Pakistan.
Modi extended the conversation to AI and energy, calling for innovation to be “creative, not destructive,” and stressing access and equity in the emerging tech era.
In his much-anticipated meeting with PM Carney, Modi sealed commitments to restore high commissioners, resume visa channels, and initiate trade talks. Yet protests from Sikh groups in Calgary continued, underscoring that diplomatic progress and community concerns still coexist uneasily.
Elsewhere, Modi shared words and laughter with world leaders. To French President Macron, Modi jokingly referenced a “Twitter fight,” and having serious defense discussions. With Japan’s PM Ishiba, they discussed joint projects in green hydrogen, cutting-edge technology, trade, and defense. But it was his meet-up with Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni that truly electrified the summit.
