DMK, BJP clash in Lok Sabha over Karthigai Deepam at Thirupparankundram

The Lok Sabha on Friday witnessed a heated clash between the DMK and BJP over the Karthigai Deepam ritual atop the hill at Thirupparankundram near Madurai. DMK leader T.R. Baalu accused the BJP of trying to ignite communal tensions in Tamil Nadu, while Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan contended that the state government was denying devotees their right to worship. As Question Hour began, DMK members moved to the well, pressing the issue of lighting the Deepam at the stone lamp pillar close to a dargah on the hill, referring to a Madras High Court order. The confrontation prompted an early adjournment of the House. Baalu argued that the BJP was stoking communal sentiments in the state, asking who should light the Deepam on the hill. Murugan countered that the state police had detained worshippers under CISF protection to ensure compliance with court orders, including the arrest of the TN BJP president. During Zero Hour, Murugan claimed the government was targeting a particular community and disturbing law and order, while the presiding member urged restraint. Murugan also asserted that devotees’ rights were being restricted, a point contested by DMK lawmakers who argued for adherence to the court’s directive allowing the ceremony. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju intervened to expunge certain remarks about a judge from the record. The episode saw DMK MPs approach Rijiju’s seat, underscoring the volatile mix of faith, law, and politics surrounding the Thirupparankundram ritual. The High Court’s December 1 ruling that ten devotees could climb the hill and light the lamp remains a focal point of the debate, reflecting broader tensions over religious practices in Tamil Nadu.
