British couple jailed for 10 years in Iran after prison interview
A rare call from Evin prison reveals Lindsay Foreman detailing life behind bars as the couple faces a 10-year espionage sentence.
A British couple detained in Iran face a decade behind bars on espionage charges, after authorities announced a 10-year sentence for the pair. Lindsay Foreman spoke in a rare telephone interview from Tehran's Evin prison, describing their detainment as an endurance test for the mind and noting the toll on her physical health. Her husband, Craig Foreman, remains detained as part of the same case, and both deny the charges. They were traveling the world on a motorcycle when they were detained while entering Iran on January 3, 2025, despite having Iranian visas, a guide, and an approved itinerary. They had planned to continue their journey to Australia via Armenia and Pakistan, but those plans were halted by the detention. No evidence of spying has been publicly presented by the authorities, according to the family, and their supporters argue the case lacks clear substantiation for the espionage accusations.
In the interview, Lindsay described trying to stay active inside the cramped prison, saying she has been running in circles in the small yard and doing what she can to maintain fitness. She said she has resigned herself to the possibility that her physical condition may not be what it was on entering prison, yet she remains hopeful about recovery after release. She emphasized the difficulty of staying positive, noting that she is surrounded by people in harsher circumstances and that her gratitude for her life thus far gives her some perspective, even as she endures the ordeal one day at a time.
The family has spoken out about the lack of presented evidence of spying. Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, described the situation as gut-wrenching, and supporters point to the timing of the sentence as a turning point in a case that has drawn international attention. The UK’s foreign secretary condemned the sentence as completely appalling and totally unjustifiable, highlighting concern from London over the authorities’ handling of the case. As the verdicts arrive, relatives and supporters are calling for a transparent process and for a reconsideration of the charges.
The Foremans’ case underscores the ongoing diplomatic frictions between Tehran and Western governments over detentions involving dual nationals and travelers, and it has become a focal point for discussions about due process and human rights in Iran.
