Adobe MAX reveals Project Primrose, a flexible, non-emissive textile that becomes a living display across fabric using Reflective Light-Diffuser Modules and Adobe's Firefly/After Effects workflow.
At the 2023 Adobe MAX conference, where they typically showcase their software products for creative professionals, Adobe surprised everyone in attendance by revealing a sneak preview of one of their secret projects called Project Primrose.

A model walked onto the stage in an unremarkable, plain white dress. As she walked across the stage, her dress visually transformed from a highly textured, matte white to a shiny, mirror-like reflection. As the model walked across the stage, various parts of her dress changed colors and produced different types of motion and patterns, producing an animated and dynamic effect. All of these effects are produced using what Adobe refers to as 'Reflective Light-Diffuser Modules' that create what they say are 'Non-Emissive Flexible Display Systems.'

According to the Adobe Communications Team, "Project Primrose," displayed at MAX, is a flexible/non-emissive textile that can display an entire surface of content created by Adobe Firefly, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Stock, and Adobe Illustrator. This technology can be used for more than just clothing. It has the potential to transform furniture and other surfaces, allowing for an infinite number of ways to express personal style. You could download the newest designer patterns and 'wear' them.

The new technology created by Adobe is based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), which is commonly used in smart window technology and is energy efficient because it doesn't emit light. It can be manufactured into various shapes and can be used to dynamically scatter light in a new way when compared to e-ink and related technologies.
The way Adobe has developed its new color change design is something we've never seen before, and it is different from what has been done before in two key areas. First, as opposed to relying on tried and true electronic ink and/or display technologies to create their new designs, Adobe chose to create a reflective technology that is more visually dramatic. Second, Adobe has combined its new reflective technology with its existing Creative Suite, indicating what the future holds. will look like when designers can design on completely new surfaces.
