Chennai saw a swift reversal of a significant regulatory decision this week, as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revoked its order to halt the sale of 11 liquor variants from Enrica Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. The initial directive, issued on Thursday, had sent ripples through the state, prompting the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) to instruct its outlets to immediately cease selling the affected products.
The prohibition came after an FSSAI inspection flagged the presence of "natural identical and artificial flavouring substances" in Enrica's liquor variants. However, by Friday, a mere day after the initial ban, a notice from R. Gajalakshmi, Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise, confirmed that the earlier order had been withdrawn.
According to a senior FSSAI official, the company appealed against the prohibition order and provided assurance of future compliance with the regulations.
Following this, the FSSAI decided to revoke the stop-sale order and instead issued an "improvement notice" to Enrica Enterprises.
"We have given them 30 days' notice.
If they fail to comply, we can take further action," the official stated, indicating that the company is now on a probationary period to meet the required standards. The initial FSSAI letter, dated August 11, specifically cited the discovery of artificial flavouring substances and mandated an immediate halt to sales.
The list of affected brands is extensive and includes popular names such as VSOP Exshaw Gold Brandy, Louis Vernant XO Blended Premium Brandy, McDowells VSOP Brandy, No.1 McDowells Fine Brandy, Mensclub Deluxe Brandy, Honey Bee Fine Brandy, Enrica VSOP Select Brandy, Enrica Platinum Reserve XO Brandy, Enrica Premium French Brandy, Veeran Special Brandy, and Enrica Old Indie Classic Dark Rum.
