Delhi residents woke up to a dramatic Monday (August 24, 2026) as heavy rains lashed the national capital, bringing much-needed respite from the sweltering humidity but also leading to widespread chaos. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) wasted no time, issuing red and orange alerts, signaling continued heavy to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour in the coming hours.
The severe weather conditions significantly impacted air travel, with 15 flights diverted from Delhi airport due to poor visibility and adverse conditions. Meanwhile, ground commuters faced their own battles, as various parts of the city reported severe waterlogging and traffic snarls. Areas like New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, Burari, C R Park, and Alaknanda were particularly affected, turning daily commutes into challenging journeys.
Social media platforms were abuzz with residents sharing images and videos of inundated streets and halted transportation.
Rainfall statistics from IMD revealed significant downpours in several locations between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with Chhatarpur recording the highest at 28 mm, followed by Lodi Road with 24.6 mm, and Pitampura at 18.5 mm. Even with just a few days into the month, Delhi has already surpassed its average August rainfall, indicating an unusually wet period.
The city's prime weather station at Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, while the maximum temperature is predicted to hit 34 degrees Celsius today.
