President Donald Trump is pointing fingers at “deranged vandals” for an alleged “350-foot slit” found in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a landmark currently undergoing a $16 million renovation. This accusation comes as the massive refurbishing project faces ongoing issues, leading to the pool being drained once again.
Trump stated he is actively seeking “vandal proof” material to replace the pool’s floor, a move he believes shouldn't have been necessary. He voiced his frustration on Truth Social, lamenting, “The Reflecting Pool, so badly damaged by Deranged Vandals, has been emptied as the massive slash gets repaired. We got it through the great July Fourth Weekend. What kind of animals would do such a thing?” He also added, “The Scum in Court will hopefully be prosecuted to the MAX.”
However, not everyone is convinced by the vandalism narrative. Critics are suggesting that the damage could, in fact, be a result of a botched repair job. Photos circulating on social media and reports from journalists on the ground have also cast doubt on the existence of such a prominent gash.
The woes for the Reflecting Pool don't stop there. After a protective coating described by the president as “American flag blue” was applied, the pool's bottom surface reportedly faded, and debris became visible. Work crews had to drain the pool this week due to these lining problems, compounded by pervasive algae blooms that turned the water an unsightly green.
The refurbishment was initially slated to be completed just in time for the Fourth of July celebrations, a deadline that was clearly missed. The FBI and U.S. Park Police are assisting in an investigation into a June 9 incident where a “sharp knife or razor” allegedly cut the pool’s new liner. Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn has since pleaded not guilty last week in connection with the incident.
This ongoing saga highlights the challenges of maintaining such an iconic national monument, especially when intertwined with political rhetoric and public debate over renovation quality versus external threats.
