The Labour leader was presented with a personalised revolver, complete with live ammunition, a gesture that certainly raised eyebrows.
This unique gift was not exclusive to Starmer; President Erdogan reportedly presented similar personalised firearms to the leaders of other nations attending the two-day summit. However, the nature of the gift created an immediate legal quandary for the British delegation.
Due to the strict firearm import laws in the United Kingdom, Sir Keir's revolver could not be brought back to the UK. Consequently, it has been left with British officials currently stationed in Turkey. Plans are now in place for the weapon to be officially decommissioned, rendering it incapable of firing live ammunition, before any potential return to the UK. This measure ensures compliance with British legal standards, as it is illegal to import a live firearm into the country. Despite the unusual present, Downing Street has opted not to release any images of the personalised revolver.
Beyond the diplomatic gifting, the summit proved productive for Sir Keir. He signed a significant defence agreement with President Erdogan, which is expected to facilitate closer intelligence-sharing efforts between the two countries.
Reflecting on the summit's outcomes, Sir Keir expressed satisfaction, emphasising the achievement of unity among NATO members. "This has been a good summit. We achieved what we wanted to achieve, which is unity," he stated. He underscored the critical importance of this solidarity, especially in light of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. This event marks a poignant moment for Sir Keir, who announced his resignation last month, making this his concluding major international appearance.
