Kurnool Bus Fire: 20 Dead, Survivors Speak of Escape Moments

A Bengaluru-bound bus tore into flames after colliding with a two-wheeler on a national highway in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, leaving 20 people charred in the blaze. Firefighters and emergency teams arrived quickly, but the flames were intense, making rescue difficult for those on board.

Inside the ill-fated journey were two namesake friends who had known each other for decades and were traveling with their families. One family did not survive; G Ramesh, his wife Anushka, and their two children were among the deceased. A family friend and survivor, N Ramesh, said he managed to break the rear window to escape after the rear emergency door appeared to be locked, a move that also helped rescue his wife, his children, and a few others from the flames.

Investigators are trying to determine the precise sequence of events — whether the crash involved a head-on collision or a bike lying on the road. Police are collecting video footage from surveillance cameras on either side of the accident site to reconstruct what happened.

Reports have circulated that as many as 234 smartphones were on board the bus, raising questions about whether the devices could have accelerated the fire or simply added to the fuel. Authorities say they will examine all aspects before drawing conclusions.

As the toll stands at 20 dead, families in Bengaluru and elsewhere mourn the losses. The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter safety measures and better emergency exits on long-distance buses. Investigators have a long road ahead to determine the exact cause and to implement reforms aimed at preventing a repeat of such a deadly incident.
