Gelatin Sticks Found Near Almora School; Police Probe Underway
Authorities say 161 gelatin sticks were found near a government high school in Almora, Uttarakhand. Preliminary probes rule out terrorist links and point to possible leftovers from a road-construction project.
About 161 gelatin sticks were found hidden in bushes near the Government Higher Secondary School in Almora district, Uttarakhand, police said. Subhash Singh, acting principal of the Dabhra school in the Salt area, spotted the packages on November 21 and alerted the authorities. The discovery prompted police to cordon off the campus as a safety precaution.
On Sunday, police said Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and dog squads from Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts were called in to assist with a thorough search. All packets were recovered from two locations—initial findings indicated 161 cylindrical sticks. The operation was videotaped and evidence collected as part of the investigation.
Investigators noted that gelatin sticks are commonly used by contractors to break stones and rock formations during road construction. The road at this location was reportedly built several years ago, and authorities are now questioning contractors and laborers in the area to determine how the material ended up in the bushes.
A case has been registered under Section 4(a) of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials have said preliminary investigations rule out any terrorist links, but a thorough inquiry is still underway to identify the source and purpose of the material.
