Tragedy Strikes Bedford: Driver Dead, 100+ Injured in Train Collision

A somber incident unfolded in the Bedford area on Friday afternoon, as two passenger trains collided, resulting in one driver's death and leaving more than 100 people injured. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly after 17:00 BST between two East Midlands Railway (EMR) services.

The British Transport Police (BTP) declared a major incident, confirming the fatality of a driver shortly before 21:00. The full extent of the casualties became clearer by Saturday morning, with 28 individuals still hospitalized. Out of these, nine were in critical condition. The East of England Ambulance Service later updated the numbers, stating that 32 people sustained serious injuries, and an additional 57 suffered minor injuries, bringing the total number of injured to 100. Among these, 11 individuals are reported to have sustained "very serious" injuries.

The collision occurred just south of the Elstow interchange, situated between the A421 and the A6. Rail service Thameslink reported that lines between Luton and Bedford were blocked from approximately 17:30. A passenger on one of the trains recounted the terrifying experience to the BBC, describing the impact by saying, "I felt like I'd been in a bomb explosion." Reports suggest one of the trains may have been stationary when the second service collided with it.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his deep concern over the collision, extending his thoughts to the family of the deceased and to all those who were seriously injured. The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has also acknowledged the tragic event, with investigations into the cause of the crash now undoubtedly underway to prevent future occurrences.
