WPL 2026 Mega Auction: Healy unsold as Sharma shines and others fly off

NEW DELHI: The 2026 Women’s Premier League mega-auction kicked off with 276 players in the running and a surprising twist as Australian captain Alyssa Healy went unsold at her base price of Rs 50 lakh. She was the very first name under the hammer, but none of the five franchises placed a bid, prompting immediate speculation about her fitness after a calf injury during the World Cup and a history of finger injuries.

Franchises are aiming to assemble squads of up to 18 players across five teams, with a total of 73 slots to fill and 23 overseas slots up for grabs. The event also highlighted the breadth of the player pool, featuring teenagers Deeya Yadav and Bharati Singh at 16 and veteran Shabnim Ismail at 37, illustrating the wide age range teams consider. Defending champions Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have retained five players each and do not have RTM available this season.

The auction produced eye-catching moments beyond the Healy moment. Deepti Sharma fetched a massive Rs 3.2 crore, secured by UP Warriorz via the RTM option. Sophie Devine commanded a Rs 2 crore bid from Gujarat Giants, underscoring her continued value at the top level. In another notable pick, South African opener Laura Wolvaardt went to Delhi Capitals, adding depth and experience at the top of the order.

As the day unfolded, organizers confirmed the season will start on January 9, with matches set to be hosted in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara, signaling a broader footprint beyond the traditional hubs. The Mega Auction sets the tone for a season that promises high-octane cricket, strategic squad-building, and a race to the title that could redefine the next chapter of the WPL.
