The nation of Iran began a somber, marathon six-day funeral ceremony on Friday, July 3, 2026, to pay its final respects to the country’s slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Officials and international dignitaries from across the globe converged on Tehran, where Khamenei's body is currently lying in state, marking the beginning of a week of profound mourning and political reflection.
Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic as its number one from 1989 until his death at age 86 on February 28—the very first day of the U.S.-Israeli war—is being commemorated with an elaborate series of events. His coffin, draped in the flag of the Islamic Republic and adorned with his iconic black turban, was carried into the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla complex alongside the coffin of his granddaughter, Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani. Representatives from approximately 30 countries, including allies like China and neighboring Caucasus nations, are expected to attend, with an Indian delegation, led by Bihar Governor Hasnain and MoS Margherita, also present. Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is representing the Congress party.
While the ceremonies unfold, there has been no public appearance yet from Khamenei's son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was named supreme leader just a week after his father's passing. The Supreme Leader's remains will lie in state until Monday, July 6, when a grand procession will make its way through Tehran. The journey of mourning will then continue to the clerical hub of Qom on Tuesday, July 7, before proceeding to Shia holy cities in neighboring Iraq on Wednesday, July 8. The final leg of the journey will culminate in Khamenei’s home city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, where he will be laid to rest on Thursday, July 9.
