A 39-year-old surfer has been bitten by a shark off Point Plomer beach in Limeburners Creek National Park, marking NSW's fourth attack in 48 hours. The man was taken to Kempsey district hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries, including grazes and a chest wound after the shark took hold of his surfboard. Lifeguards and emergency services responded quickly to the incident, and the patient was reported to be in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Surf Life Saving NSW said drone surveillance and lifeguard teams were deployed in the area near Crescent Head, and beaches between Town Beach and Crescent Head were closed following the attack. Officials noted that poor water quality, exacerbated by heavy rainfall, has created conditions conducive to bull shark activity and urged swimmers and surfers to consider alternative options until the coast is deemed safe again.
The incident comes amid a broader spate of shark activity across NSW, including reports of attacks near Sydney in recent days. A 12-year-old boy remained in hospital after being bitten near Nielsen Park on Sunday, underscoring the heightened risk along the state’s coast. Authorities stressed that the man involved in the Point Plomer incident did not suffer life-threatening injuries and is recovering with minor wounds.
Beach safety advocates emphasized the need for vigilance as officials continue to monitor the situation with additional patrols and surveillance in place, reminding the public to heed warnings and avoid swimming in areas where shark sightings or bites have occurred.
