Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat Granted Anticipatory Bail in Hate Speech Case

The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge, Puttur, D. Saritha, has granted anticipatory bail to RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat in connection with an FIR registered against him for allegedly making a hate speech. The judge on Wednesday allowed the application of Mr. Bhat filed under Section 482 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. On a complaint by Ishwari Padmunja, district joint secretary of Janawadi Mahila Sangha, the Puttur Rural police registered case for an alleged hate speech by Mr. Bhat during the Deepotsava programme in Uppalige of Irde village of Puttur taluk in Dakshina Kannada on October 20. In the speech, Mr. Bhat allegedly said that Hindu women should give birth to more children, like Muslim women, and increase the population of Hindus. The police registered the case against Mr. Bhat and organisers of the Deepotsava programme for offences punishable under Sections 79, 196, 299 and 302 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Ms. Padmunja appeared before the court with her counsel and opposed grant of anticipatory bail.

The decision adds to ongoing conversations about the boundaries of political speech and accountability. Supporters say bail enables due process, while opponents argue that such statements can inflame communal tensions. The case has drawn focus to Deepotsava events in rural Karnataka and the rhetoric surrounding population demographics. The bail order did not specify any conditions, and investigators continue to proceed with the legal process in accordance with the statute.
