Sensex, Nifty end flat after fresh highs; heavyweights pull back
Indian benchmarks closed marginally lower after hitting fresh highs, with five heavyweight stocks leading a pullback as investors await GDP data.
Domestic stocks closed flat on Friday, reversing early gains as pressure from heavyweight names weighed on the indices. The Sensex slipped 13.71 points to settle at 85,706.67, while the Nifty declined 12.60 points to finish at 26,202.95. Five major contributors to the dip were HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Infosys and Power Grid, which collectively pulled the benchmark lower. Sectoral weakness was led by the energy and oil & gas indices, with the BSE Energy index down 0.64% to close at 12,018.27 and the BSE Oil & Gas index down 0.97% to 28,207.28.
Overall, the market breadth was mixed, with 2,024 stocks closing higher and 2,121 lower out of 4,312 actively traded BSE securities, while 167 remained unchanged. In terms of daily price action, 117 stocks touched 52-week highs, and 161 sank to 52-week lows, underscoring the uneven nature of the session. Additionally, 190 scrips hit upper circuits, while 163 were locked in lower circuits, highlighting continued volatility beneath the surface.
Analysts attributed the quiet close to selective profit-taking after a recent rally, even as sentiment remained buoyant on the back of progress in India–US trade discussions and strength in large-cap sectors like autos, financials, and pharma. Supportive global cues, including expectations of a potential Fed rate cut, helped underpin investor confidence. With Q2 GDP and industrial output (IIP) data due shortly, the broader market is likely to watch for cues on domestic growth momentum. The immediate tone suggests a cautious yet constructive environment for selective buying in high-conviction names, particularly in large-cap space.
Looking ahead, traders may focus on how the market digests upcoming macro data and any new developments in trade negotiations. While the headline indices paused after fresh highs, the underlying breadth hints at pockets of strength, especially among financials and technology-related counters, which could set the stage for further moves in the coming sessions.
