Delhi Heatwave: Intense Heat To Return After Brief Rain Relief
Delhi gets a short break from the scorching sun with rain and winds, but the relief won't last long. Intense heatwave conditions are set to return this Sunday.
Residents of Delhi-NCR finally caught a break from the brutal heat as light rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms swept through the city. The sudden change in weather brought temperatures down and offered a much-needed cooling effect after days of searing heat.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), wind speeds during the dust storm reached up to 81 kmph in some areas like Pusa Road. While the rain helped settle the dust and lower the mercury, the relief is unfortunately temporary. The weather office has issued an orange alert, warning that intense heatwave conditions are poised to make a comeback starting this Sunday.
Forecasters predict that maximum temperatures will soon hover between 43°C and 46°C again. The brief respite was caused by a change in wind direction and thunderstorm activity over Northwest India, but the dry, hot air from the Thar desert is expected to dominate once more. Visibility at Palam airport even dropped significantly during the peak of the storm, falling from 3,500 metres to 1,500 metres in just one hour.
Experts advise residents to remain cautious as the heat is expected to persist until at least May 28. Even with the occasional cloudy sky, the city is bracing for a 'warm night' trend and sustained high temperatures. For now, Delhiites are making the most of the breeze before the orange alert heat returns.
