UK Man Charged with Assisting Russian Spy Agency in Swindon!

A significant national security development has unfolded in Swindon, where 31-year-old Joshua Cammidge has been charged with serious offences related to assisting a foreign intelligence service. This follows an intensive investigation led by counter-terrorism policing (CTP) London, with support from Wiltshire police.

Cammidge was apprehended at an address in Swindon on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Following his arrest, further searches were conducted at another location in the town. He was subsequently charged with two critical offences: assisting a foreign intelligence service and intending to commit or engage in conduct to prepare an act of sabotage.

The Metropolitan Police have indicated that these charges stem from Cammidge’s alleged contact with a representative of the GRU Volunteer Corps. This group, controlled by Russia’s military intelligence agency, has previously been implicated in acts of sabotage against Britain and its allies, highlighting the gravity of the allegations.

This case marks a notable application of the National Security Act, which was enacted in 2023.

The Act was specifically introduced to bolster law enforcement's capabilities in safeguarding the UK against various security threats, including espionage, foreign interference, and sabotage.

Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS special crime and counter-terrorism division, confirmed the decision to prosecute Cammidge under these new provisions, underscoring the thoroughness of the counter-terrorism policing investigation.
