Prohibitory Orders in Assam as KAAC Chief’s House Burned in Protests
Protests in Karbi Anglong lead to the KAAC chief’s house being set on fire, injuring several and prompting night curfews and prohibitory orders across two districts.
Diphu, four people were injured in police firing as protesters who had been on a 12-day hunger strike clashed with security forces. The demonstrators set ablaze the old residence of the KAAC chief in Donkamokam, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. A night curfew from 5 pm to 6 am was imposed across Karbi Anglong district. The DGP, Harmeet Singh, is camping in the area and holding discussions with protestors. The agitators, representing several political and social groups, have been demanding eviction of illegal settlers from Professional Grazing Reserve and Village Grazing Reserve for days, escalating tensions. In the clash at Kheroni, security forces attempted to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries to three agitators and a policeman. Fire tenders were pressed into service to douse flames at the house. KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang later told reporters that three hunger-strikers were admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital.
