India Honors Space Hero Shubhanshu Shukla with Ashoka Chakra
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla becomes the first Indian to set foot on the ISS, awarded the Ashoka Chakra for peacetime bravery and space service.
India saluted its space pioneers as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was conferred the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration, for his contributions to the space programme through his journey and stay at the International Space Station.
Shukla made history by reaching the ISS after launch by SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on June 26, 2025. He is the first Indian astronaut to set foot on the ISS, a landmark achievement that places him among the ranks of India's most celebrated space travelers, following the earlier journeys of Rakesh Sharma. As a fighter pilot, Shukla has logged nearly 2,000 hours of flight across a diverse fleet including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32, underscoring a career built on precision and endurance.
The award comes as part of President Droupadi Murmu's Republic Day honors, which recognized 70 armed forces personnel for gallantry and distinguished service, including six posthumously. Among the recipients, Group Captain PB Nair was named for the Kirti Chakra, highlighting the extraordinary array of achievers being celebrated this year. Shukla's Ashoka Chakra underscores the growing link between India's space ambitions and its peacetime military valor, marking a new era for space-related achievement at the highest national level.
Beyond the ceremony, Shukla's journey is emblematic of a broader push to expand India's role in space exploration and technology.
