A recent survey has uncovered a delicious trend sweeping across the UK: "noshtalgia." This delightful term describes the strong emotional connection Britons feel towards comforting foods from their childhood, with "dippy" eggs and soldiers leading the charge as the ultimate memory-sparking meal. The study, which polled 2,000 Britons, found that soft-boiled eggs with buttered toast strips topped the list of most nostalgic dishes, captivating 39% of respondents.
Other cherished contenders included perennial favorites like Angel Delight (38%), fish fingers with chips and beans (37%), and the classic jelly and ice cream (37%). Beans on toast and sausage and mash also featured prominently, highlighting a collective yearning for simple, heartwarming fare.
Culinary history consultant Sue Bailey shed light on this phenomenon, explaining that
personal nostalgia is a strong emotion linked to the familiar taste and smell of food.
She emphasized how comforting childhood foods, even those like butterscotch Angel Delight that might not appeal to adult palates today, hold a special place in our hearts. However, the timeless appeal of a dippy egg is undeniable, often serving as a beloved treat or even a hangover cure for adults.
The survey also revealed preferences for dippy eggs: most favor a runny yolk, white sliced bread for soldiers, and salted butter. While traditionalists still abound, some are adding adventurous twists like Marmite, hot honey, or harissa. Bex Tonks, founder of St Ewe Free Range Eggs, noted that while tastes might evolve, from white bread to sourdough, for instance, the fundamental joy of cracking an egg and dipping a soldier remains unchanged.
Will Torrent from Waitrose further elaborated on the "noshtalgia" surge, stating that in today's fast-paced world, people are seeking more than just fuel from their food; they're craving comfort and escapism. Dishes like shepherd's pie, rice pudding, or fish fingers and beans offer exactly that, warm, soft, carb-rich solace that transports diners back to simpler times.
