An India-flagged cargo ship, the MSV Faize Noore Oliya, tragically capsized and sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen on Tuesday after being struck by a projectile. Fortunately, all 14 seafarers on board, including 13 Indian nationals, have been successfully rescued, as confirmed by Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The incident occurred in a region that has seen increasing maritime instability. India has strongly condemned this "unprovoked attack on the defenceless mechanised sailing vessel," labeling the continuing incidents targeting commercial shipping in the area as "deeply worrisome." Minister Sonowal reported that the crew members were rescued by the Yemeni coast guard and brought to the safety of the Port of Mokha.
In response to the alarming event, the Director General Maritime Administration has been instructed to take immediate steps. These measures involve close coordination with all relevant agencies to ensure the "absolute security" of Indian seafarers operating in the region. Additionally, the directive includes providing all necessary assistance and support to the rescued crew members.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement, clarifying that "Our Embassy in Riyadh is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with Yemeni authorities for safety and security of the crew. We thank Yemeni authorities for their support." This incident underscores the heightened risks faced by maritime trade routes and the critical need for international efforts to ensure the safety and security of seafarers worldwide.
