The dreams of the Indian women's hockey team for a place in the World Cup semifinals were dashed at the Wagener Stadion as they played out a goalless draw against Australia. In a must-win encounter, the Salima Tete-led side could not find the crucial goal, leading to their elimination from the tournament. Australia, despite the draw, advanced to the last-four stage, having secured more goals in the earlier group matches.
India's campaign, which saw an inspired run into the second round, ultimately exposed some critical areas for improvement. A significant challenge for the team throughout the match was their inability to create meaningful chances from field play, extending their goalless streak to three games. In the final quarter, India showed improvement in beating Australia's press, managing to reach the final 25-meter area, but lacked the composure and creativity required to get into prime goal-scoring positions. While India valiantly defended a flurry of penalty corners in the dying moments to keep their hopes alive, they ultimately couldn't find the answers in front of the net.
The Indian women's team will now compete in a fifth-sixth classification match, bringing an end to their World Cup semifinal ambitions.
