Four Die After Biryani and Watermelon Dinner in Mumbai; Investigation Underway
A Mumbai family of four died after eating biryani and watermelon; police say food samples are being tested as investigators probe suspected food poisoning.
Four members of a family in the Pydhonie area of South Mumbai died on Sunday after experiencing vomiting and diarrhea following a meal of biryani and watermelon. The tragedy unfolded after they hosted five relatives for dinner; those relatives, who did not have the watermelon, are not reported to have fallen ill. Police have registered an accidental death report and have sent samples of the food for forensic testing to determine whether the meals were contaminated.
The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia, 40, his wife Nasreen, 35, and their daughters Aisha, 16, and Zainab, 13. They lived in the Mughal Building at Ghati Galli, Pydhonie. The family is said to have dinner late Saturday night into Sunday early morning, after which the four began showing severe symptoms and were rushed to hospital; despite medical intervention, they died.
Post-mortems have been conducted, and while initial signs point to gastroenteritis, investigators say the exact cause remains unclear. Authorities say the investigation will consider several possibilities, including contamination at any stage of food handling, storage, or preparation. Public health officials emphasize that this is an ongoing case and urge people to practice proper hygiene and safe food handling. The five relatives who did not consume watermelon reportedly remained symptom-free, but investigators stress that more time and laboratory results are needed before any definitive conclusions are drawn.
