Bihar Boat Tragedy: 2 Missing After Ganga Capsizes, 19 Rescued

A tragic incident unfolded in Bhagalpur, Bihar, as a boat carrying 21 passengers capsized in the Ganga River. Quick response teams sprang into action, successfully rescuing 19 individuals, but a search operation is still underway for the two missing persons. Officials reported that shifting weight within the boat, combined with treacherous changing currents, led to the imbalance that caused the vessel to overturn.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) swiftly deployed six boats to aid in the rescue efforts. Bhagalpur district magistrate Alankrita Pandey, along with other officials, visited the site to oversee the situation and coordinate emergency responses.

Engineers are focusing on stopping erosion to manage the flow of floodwater, highlighting the broader environmental challenges facing the region.

This capsizing incident occurs against a backdrop of a grim flood situation across Bihar. Numerous rivers, including the Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Khiroi, and Ghaghra, continue to flow above danger levels in districts like Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Khagaria, and Siwan. The Ganga itself is significantly above its normal and danger levels in several key locations, including Patna, Hatidah, and Kahalgaon.

The current spell of floods has severely impacted over 83.62 lakh people across 1,333 panchayats in 130 blocks spanning 16 districts. The meteorological department forecasts enhanced rain activity for the next two days in the southern districts of Bihar, influenced by a monsoon trough and a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

This grim forecast suggests that the flood situation may worsen before it improves, underscoring the urgent need for continued vigilance and relief efforts across the state.
