Amazon Concerns Lead to Global Halt of Anthropic AI Models by US Gov
Breaking: Anthropic's advanced AI models, Fable 5 & Mythos 5, halted globally on a US national security order. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy's security concerns influenced the Trump administration's decision, impacting AI access
The AI world is buzzing after Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI startup, unexpectedly shut down its latest and most advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, globally. This dramatic move came on Friday, June 12, 2026, directly in response to a national security order issued by the Trump administration.
The extraordinary decision was reportedly influenced by concerns raised by prominent tech leaders, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Sources close to the matter revealed that Jassy voiced security risks associated with Anthropic’s AI models to senior Trump administration officials earlier in the week. Amazon, a significant cloud provider, confirmed that governments often seek its counsel on potential security risks but declined to share specifics of these discussions.
Anthropic had previously acknowledged the formidable hacking capabilities of its Mythos model, even holding it back from wide release. However, they recently launched a public version, Fable, which they claimed incorporated robust cybersecurity safeguards. This brief public release was abruptly ended by the government's order.
According to Anthropic's blog post, the U.S. government informed them of a method to bypass, or "jailbreak," the safeguards designed to prevent the model from identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities. While Anthropic asserted that the bypass only exposed "minor" security flaws — capabilities also present in other publicly available models — the Trump administration took decisive action.
The government's directive specifically ordered Anthropic to block all foreign nationals, both within and outside the U.S., from accessing both Fable 5 and Mythos 5. In compliance, Anthropic opted for a global shutdown of these models, sparking a wider debate about AI sovereignty and national security in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
