A wave of excitement and hope has swept through the Toronto Zoo following the birth of a female pygmy hippo calf. This precious new arrival, born to 20-year-old Kindia, marks a significant moment for the critically endangered species and conservation efforts worldwide.
Kindia began showing signs of labor last Sunday morning at approximately 8:15 AM. After an intense few hours, with the calf's feet emerging around four hours later and 1.5 hours of active labor, the baby pygmy hippo made her grand entrance. Within a mere 15 minutes of birth, the determined calf was already attempting to stand, and just a few hours later, she was confidently exploring her new surroundings. The zoo happily reported that the calf was observed nursing within 4.5 hours of her arrival, a crucial step for her early development.
While the calf has yet to be named, she is reportedly thriving alongside her experienced mother, Kindia. This is Kindia's third offspring, having successfully raised her daughter Penelope in 2018. The calf's father is 31-year-old Harvey, who was introduced to Kindia for eight days in January, leading to this joyful pregnancy.
The zoo, however, acknowledges the delicate nature of such births. They stated, "This wonderful news comes with both hope and caution." Given the challenging survival rates for pygmy hippos, the dedicated team at the Toronto Zoo will be providing round-the-clock monitoring for both mother and calf during these vital initial days to ensure their continued well-being.
Dolf DeJong, CEO of the Toronto Zoo, emphasized the broader significance of the birth. "Welcoming a pygmy hippo calf is far more than a celebration of new life," he explained. "Pygmy hippos are endangered, and their wild populations continue to decline due to habitat loss and human pressures. This birth represents the critical role zoos play in species survival programs." The species is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, making each new birth an invaluable step towards securing its future.
