A prominent Indigenous actor has filed a federal lawsuit against filmmaker James Cameron, alleging that her facial features were used without permission to design Neytiri in the Avatar franchise. The complaint, lodged in a California federal court, claims Cameron directed the design team to model Neytiri’s appearance using Kilcher’s facial structure after seeing a photograph from The New World, in which she portrayed Pocahontas at age 14. The suit names The Walt Disney Company and Lightstorm Entertainment among the defendants and argues that the process involved sketches, digital scans, and visual effects assets that circulated throughout the Avatar series. The filing asserts that this was not mere inspiration but a form of extraction of Kilcher’s likeness without consent. Kilcher’s legal team has said the claim centers on identity and Indigenous heritage being commercially exploited without permission.
