UK supermarket giant Morrisons has officially thrown down the gauntlet in the fiercely competitive grocery market, launching an "unbeatable prices" pledge. The Bradford-based chain is committing to match or beat the prices of its five biggest rivals, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, and Lidl, on hundreds of everyday products.
This move signals a significant intensification in the ongoing price war among the UK's top grocers, all vying for a larger share of shoppers' wallets.
The new commitment aims to help Morrisons reclaim lost ground in the UK grocery sector. The supermarket's market share has dwindled in recent years, placing it as the sixth-largest, with an 8.5% share in the 12 weeks leading up to August. This position saw it recently overtaken by discounter Lidl.
The "unbeatable prices" promise covers more than 500 weekly essential items.
Shoppers can expect guaranteed low prices on fresh produce like bananas, tomatoes, and carrots, alongside staples such as bread, butter, and chicken fillets. The initiative also extends to fresh offerings from the retailer's popular Market Street counters, including its fishmongers and bakeries.
This isn't Morrisons' first foray into direct price competition. The latest pledge comes two years after the supermarket initially launched a price match against hundreds of Aldi and Lidl products, indicating a sustained effort to combat the German discounters.
Alex Paver, Morrisons' customer and marketing director, emphasized the value proposition:
